During the process of writing the different assignments for this class, I have seen a few improvements in my writing. At the beginning of the semester, I had to write a scientist profile telling the reader about my scientist and his research. I chose a complicated topic which was post-traumatic stress disorder. I feel like the reason I did not get a higher grade is because I did not know much of the content of PTSD. The mistake that I made in this paper is that I did not focus on my scientist, I focused on his research and I did not mention why I was interested in this scientist. In this writing process, tutoring sessions were very helpful because I had the opportunity to discuss with my tutor the different aspect for this paper and correct my grammar. Writing my scientist profile, I addressed different learning outcomes such as, “Enhance strategies for reading, drafting, revising, editing, and self- assessment.” Since, I was writing about my scientist and his main focus of his research, I had to do research and read his studies. For this paper I made two drafts before the deadline, I revised every comment that my tutor gave me and I edited my paper with my professor’s comments.
When I received my professor’s last comment on my final draft for the scientist profile. I used his feedback for the next writing assignment which is the literature review. I stuck with the same topic. In this assignment I addressed four learning outcomes that helped me to develop my ideas for my paper. First, “Practice of using various library resources, online databases, and the internet to locate sources appropriate to your writing assignments.” For this assignment, I examined three main treatments for PTSD. In order to find the three main treatments I had to use online databases which lead me to address one of the learning outcomes which is, “Enhance strategies for reading, drafting, revising., editing, and self assessment.” By reading through the studies and identifying the treatments I came with the conclusion that these treatments are effective not only in adults but in children as well. When I received my final grade for this paper I was horrified because I was confused about what to do in the paper. In order to revise my paper, I did multiple research which lead me to address one of the learning outcome, “ Engage in genre analysis and multi research composing to explore effective writing across disciplinary contexts and beyond.” Another learning outcome that I addressed for this paper is “Acknowledge your and others’ range of linguistic differences as resources, and draw on those resources to develop rhetorical sensibilities.” For this paper, I had to do a deep analysis and critique their research and their sample sizes.
Additionally, when I received my grades for the first two writing assignments, I decided to change my topic because I felt like my topic was so deep that I could not understand and explain to my audience. For my research paper, I decided to argue about why vegan diets can negatively affect people’s health. For this paper I addressed another learning outcome which is “Formulate and articulate a stance through and in your writing.” In order to argue I had to take a position and support my claim. In the process of my writing, there were two different activities that helped me to think about beyond my position for my paper. The first activity is the research proposal. In this proposal I had the opportunity to brainstorm my ideas and start to look for sources that I could use as background information and to provide a counter argument. The second activity is working with my classmate. For this activity, I addressed another learning outcome which is “Develop and engage in the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes”. My classmate gave me useful comments that I corporated in my paper and vice versa.
For the future I will use these same learning outcomes because it helped me in my writing process. Although I did not see my writing improvements, I tried my best to revise my first two writing assignments and deliver my ideas as much direct as possible. For my future writing assignments I will submit more often my drafts to my professor, concentrate to not repeat myself in my writing and make my point clear. I will use the format of scientistic articles to get an idea about how I need to write my papers. Taking this class helped me to learn from my writing mistakes and gave me the ideas about what articles I expect to read in the future with jargon and intensive science concepts.
