Research Paper First Draft

Throughout the years, many people are starting to have different diets for many circumstances. The most common diet that people use is Vegetarianism. Vegetarianism is the practice of not eating meat or fish. There are different types of vegetarianism which are, lacto- ovo- vegetarians, lacto- vegetarians, ovo vegetarians, pesca- vegetarian and vegan. Lacto- ovo- vegetarians eat vegetables, eggs and dairy products, but they do not eat meat. Lacto- vegetarian eat vegetable and dairy products, but they do not eat meat and eggs. Ovo- vegetarians eat vegetables and eggs, but they do not eat meat and dairy products. Pesco- vegetarian eat fish, seafood and vegetables. This type of diet is considered to be semi- vegetarian. Lastly, vegan does not eat anything that comes from animal such as, eggs, milk, cheese and butter. A vegetarian diet can be adopted for many reasons that can include ecological, economic, religious, ethical and health consideration. Nowadays people adopt vegan or vegetarian diet for health consideration. In this paper I will talk about if veganism and vegetarianism are done wrong, mental health, growth in children and vitamin intake can be negatively affected.

There are many people that become vegan or vegetarian not knowing the proper way to have a diet and as a result, they start having problems in their mental health. “ Depressive symptoms are associated if any food groups are excluded from your diet”( Joane Matta et., al ). In other words, one mental problem that a person can face if they do not have a proper vegan/ vegetarian diet is depressive symptoms. Depressive symptoms not only can affect people mentally, but also can affect them physically. Having depressive symptoms can cause a variety of changes such as, it can change their behavior, energy level and also it can cause people to suicide. However, Depressive symptoms not only can affect vegetarians, it can also affect people that do not eat vegetables. “ For instance, vegetable- free diets were similarly associated with depressive symptoms as were meat- free diets”( Joane Matta et., al).  Depressive symptoms can be caused for any group food exclusion. This depressive symptoms are more associated with vegan diet. “ The unadjusted prevalence of depressive symptoms was highest in the vegan diet group”( Joanne Matta et., el). The reason vegan diet group is the most associated with having depressive symptoms is because they exclude many nutrients in their diet such as, meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, eggs and bee products.

Furthermore, the improper vegan/vegetarian diet not only can affect mental health, but also it can affect growth in children. In many cases, there are parents that teach their children from a young age to have a vegetarian diet, not knowing that this diet is not adequate for their children. “ Some cases of rickets, growth retardation and stunting have been observed in Vegans” ( Allan Hackett et., al). In other words, children that have a vegan diet do not growth the sufficient high for their age. This type of children do not get the enough nutrients in order for them to growth. Compared to other children that eat meat, children that have a vegan diet tend to me more short and thin. “ Consumption of dairy products more than 3 times per week was associated with significantly better heights and weights compared with children who consumed such products less frequently”( Allan Hackett et., al). This is showing how dairy products can impact children’s growth since, vegan children do not consume this type of products they do not get the necessary nutrients for their growth.
